Synopsis[]
Diana and Charles wage a media war. The monarchy's role is up for debate. Welcome to the '90s — and Queen Elizabeth II's biggest challenge to date.

The fifth season covers the life of Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family during the 1990s and the marriage between Diana, Princess of Wales and Prince Charles, followed by their divorce and private romantic lives. It introduces Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed, two of Diana's lovers, as well as diving into the relationship between Charles and Camilla. It also discusses the royal Britannia yacht and a reunion between Margaret and Peter Townsend.

Production[]
It began production in summer 2021 and is broadcast on November 9, 2022. After reducing the series from the originally planned six series to five, producer Peter Morgan announced the series will run six seasons in order to fully capture the events of the monarchy in the 21st century. Season 5 will bring the maturing Queen's reign into the new century, and will cover the tenures of prime ministers John Major and Tony Blair. Events anticipated include the dissolution of Charles and Diana's marriage and Diana's death.
Casting[]
In January 2020, Imelda Staunton was announced the Queen in the fifth season. In July 2020, Lesley Manville was announced as portraying Princess Margaret, and the following month, Jonathan Pryce and Elizabeth Debicki had been cast as Prince Philip and Diana, Princess of Wales, respectively.
Dominic West was confirmed to play Prince Charles in April 2021. In June 2021, Jonny Lee Miller was cast as John Major and Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles. In November 2021, it was announced Senan West was cast as Prince William. In March 2022, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu was cast as Monique Ritz.
