King Edward VIII, later known as Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (born Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David), is a recurring character on Netflix drama The Crown. He is the older brother of King George VI and the paternal uncle of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret.
He is played by Alex Jennings in Seasons 1 and 2, as well as in an episode of Season 5, and by Derek Jacobi in Season 3. Adam Buchanan portrays a young Edward in a flashback in Season 5, Episode 6.
Biography[]
Born Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, on 23 June 1894 to King George V and Queen Mary, he was the older brother of King George VI. He reigned as King Edward VIII from 20 January 1936 to 11 December 1936, abdicating to marry Wallis, Duchess of Windsor. Simpson was an American woman who was twice divorced - therefore unacceptable as a member of the Royal Family at the time.

- Alex Jennings, who played Edward in Seasons 1 and 2, also played King Charles III (then Prince of Wales) in the 2006 film, The Queen which was written by Peter Morgan.
- Charles Edwards previously portrayed Edward in the 2002 TV movie, Bertie and Elizabeth. The film also featured Eileen Atkins.
- He served as one of Princess Margaret's royal baptismal sponsors.
