Group Captain Peter Townsend, CVO, DSO, DFC and Bar is a recurring character in the Netflix series, The Crown. He is portrayed by Ben Miles in Seasons 1 and 2 and by Timothy Dalton in Season 5.
Townsend serves as an equerry to King George VI who gets engaged to Princess Margaret after having an affair. The scandal divides the country when it is publicly revealed, and the couple call the engagement off.
Biography[]
Townsend is a former group captain in the Royal Air Force and fought in WW2. He worked as equerry to King George VI and was married with two children but entertained an ongoing affair with Princess Margaret. Eventually, he got a divorce and planned to marry Princess Margaret. However, after the news broke and an impending scandal was underway for the Royal Family, he was posted to Brussels. There, he served as air attaché from 1953 to 1956.
