Robert "Bob" James Lee Hawke AC GCL is a character in the Netflix series, The Crown. He served as Prime Minister of Australia from 1983 until 1991 as a member of the Australian Labor Party. He is portrayed by Richard Roxburgh.
Biography[]
Prior to his time in office, Hawke served as leader of the Australian Council of Trade Unions from 1970 until 1980.[1]
Portrayal[]
In The Crown, Hawke is shown as a republican who was determined to make Australia a republic as soon as possible. While the real Hawke was a republican, he did not feel making Australia a republic a first-order priority whilst as Prime Minister was necessary. Hawke was pragmatic on when Australia should become a republic. It seems that Peter Morgan may have confused Hawke with his successor Paul Keating. Of the two, Keating is the more vocal in his republicanism. Curiously, Keating is not depicted in The Crown.
